Stock Tokens Are Not Stocks

2 Sep 2026

Interfaces like to make different objects look familiar. A ticker, a chart, and a buy button can make a token feel identical to the stock whose price it follows. The legal structure does not disappear because the pixels look familiar.

Robinhood's documentation describes Stock Tokens as ERC-20 tokenized debt securities that provide economic exposure to an underlying asset. Holders do not receive legal or beneficial ownership of that underlying asset. That sentence is not fine print; it is the center of the object.

This does not make the instrument uninteresting. It makes precision mandatory. Before watching price, I want to know what is owned, who owes what, where redemption happens, and which system must keep working for the exposure to remain meaningful.
